Toronto 2010…Day 6…Operation Hydration…Regent Park…Wrap Up
Jun 25th, 2010 by admin

The day began with one team going to Good Shepherd again, making beds and hanging out with the people that came for lunch. It was a great ending to a good time there. The other team did the ethnic plunge to China Town, bringing back some Jasmine tea and sampling some Chinese goodies in town.

After lunch both teams went back to Moss Park for Operation Hydration, to pass out bottles of water and talk to people in one of the most desnse mission house areas. Did you know there are about 6,000 beds in Toronto available for the homeless every night?

Then the group went back to Regent Park to help with a carnival to wrap up the school year put on by the Kiwanis boys and girls club. It was a great time and our group pitched in well. Dinner was at Sushi on Bloor…yes Sushi. Most students tried it. Then we went by the lake and did a wrap up, putting what we have learned and seen into perspective. What a great week…I think a lot of students had their eyes opened, even just to living a little less judgementally. Hopefully, you’ll find out. We hit the road early…

Toronto 2010 Day 5…Good Shepherd…Open Door…Ethnic Plunge
Jun 24th, 2010 by admin

Today began with breakfast, devotions, and then the groups split and went again to Good Shepherd and Open Door. Many beds were made and the Good Shepherd group stayed for lunch, visiting with the guys there. The Open Door group prepared lunch and then enjoyed it with their guests. The Open Door group also had a good time playing games with people there for the drop in time in the afternoon.

The GS group then went to Little India to endeavor on a scavenger hunt helping students to learn about India culture. They ate Paan, Kulfi and some sugar cane drink. It was a good experience and now students know what not to eat when in India.

Dinner was at a Somalian restaurant where students ate chicken, rice, soup, and goat…all without any silverware. They had to use their hands, so you may have to break them of that when they get back.

The day concluded with some worship time in the church…there was art work, singing, reading, praying and encouragement ideas. It was a great time of worship and a great way to spend the night. Tomorrow is our last day here and these students are doing great!!

Toronto 2010 Earthquake Day
Jun 23rd, 2010 by admin

The earthquake that hit Ontario today did NOT affect Toronto whatsoever, so be at peace. Everyone is safe and doing great!!

Toronto 2010…Day 4…Good Shepherd…Regent Park…Sandwich Run
Jun 23rd, 2010 by admin

Today both groups started out at the Good Shepherd shelter where everyone got a tour and info about the shelter and more, then spent an hour making many beds.

Lunch was had at the shelter and many students ate lunch with people that were there to get a free meal. After lunch the weather turned to rain so we prepared for the afternoon. We made sandwiches and cleaned up the church.

The afternoon was spent on a walk through Regent Park, the name of the largest housing project in Toronto. Many people spent time talking to lots of residents there, then the walk ended by playing with lots of kids that were there in an after school program…school ends on June 29.

Dinner was poutine (a Canadian dish…google it), and the evening was spent on the sandwich run. The group was put into 3 small groups and travelled around downtown looking for people who might be in need of a bag lunch.

Another long, but very rewarding day…lots of great interaction between our students and people on the streets in Toronto…they did great. They were respectful and confident. You can see more photos at http://xroadsfcc.com/photos (tomorrow)

Toronto 2010 Day 3…Good Shepherd, Open Door, Street Walk
Jun 21st, 2010 by admin

Today’s adventure included breakfast with 60 people in a small room and then we split into two groups…one group heading to Open Door, an organization that serves gourmet meals to the homeless.  The group helped to prepare the fresh foods.  The other group went to Good Shepherd to make beds for those who would need housing for the night at that shelter.  The group made 66 beds before lunch…maybe that skill will make it home??

Lunch was at a greek kabob restaurant which was fabulous, followed by some time in the park doing LIFE (Living In Faith Everyday).  This time included a bible study, then some ideas about how to serve…so small groups walked around talking to people and cheered on a softball game between two shelters…yes there was a shelter league softball game.

The night included a “Street Walk” pretending that we were all 12, had run away from home and had $2 and a bus token in our pockets…how would we find food, shelter, hygiene, money, and entertainment?  So we spent the night discovering how hard it would be to live on the street.

Another long day, but very rewarding…everyone is doing great!
